The Letter
Remember letters? The paper kind- hand written and tucked inside an envelope with a stamp and return address? Growing up in my family, writing letters was not negotiable. It was just what you did. On birthdays and Christmas our family was never allowed to use the awesome fill in the blank
Dear ___________, Thank you for the very nice______________. Love,___________ .
We had to write a letter, dig deep for adjectives and fill the blank page with thankfulness.
It was a little later in life when I began to appreciate the value of written expressions of gratitude. Shortly before my mom’s sudden death I felt a nudge to write her a letter and tell her how much I loved her. My letter included some specific things I admired about her, along with some serious thoughts about faith and the future. My intention was to be certain she knew exactly how much she was loved and cherished.
A couple weeks later I was thrilled to receive a return letter written in her familiar big loopy handwriting. Her reply was filled with family news, encouragement and her characteristic unconditional love for me. Now, several years later those priceless pages of her engraved stationery bring a smile to my face and remind me just how blessed I am.
Who is it for you?
Maybe it’s your spouse or a parent or a child- who is it in your life that needs to know how much they’re loved and appreciated?
Don’t wait. Write the letter. Say what you need to say. You’ll be glad you did.
